Full guide and materials
- Ready numeral cards: 1, 5, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20
- Ready word cards: one, five, eight, ten, twelve, fourteen, sixteen, eighteen, twenty
- Paper and marker for one writing try
- Step 1. Lay out the numeral cards. Read 12 together and find twelve.
- Step 2. Match the remaining pairs from the ready set.
- Step 3. Hold up a word card such as fourteen and have your child say the number and find 14.
- Step 4. Dictate two numbers from the set and have your child write the word forms, then check against the cards.
- Quick check. Success means your child matches at least five numeral/word pairs and writes at least one number word from 1–20 correctly.
Worked example. 12 matches twelve. 20 matches twenty. A correct write for 14 is fourteen.
Optional challenge. Sequence the matched pairs from smallest to largest and read the word cards in order.
What to notice. Save a parent note listing matched pairs and any number words written, such as “12–twelve, 14–fourteen.”
