  1. Step 1. Name three habitats such as forest, desert, and pond and describe what each is like.
  2. Step 2. Choose an animal for each habitat and explain why it belongs there.
  3. Step 3. Draw one animal in its habitat and add labels for food, water, shelter, and space.
  4. Step 4. Use the words organism, habitat, and survive while reviewing the drawing.
  5. Quick check. Name an unfamiliar animal and two possible habitats. Success means your child chooses a reasonable habitat and identifies two needs it provides.

Worked example. A frog is an organism that can live in a pond habitat. The pond provides insects for food, water, plants for shelter, and room to move.

Optional challenge. Compare two habitats and identify one inherited or physical adaptation that a different animal already has for surviving in each.

What to notice. Save a photo of the labeled habitat drawing, or a short note recording how your child matched an animal to its needs.

Teaching approaches

Gakuva’s recommended starting approach is selected. You can still compare every option.

1 approach

Selected Default Gakuva

A habitat is the place where an organism lives. It provides things the organism needs, such as food, water, shelter, and space.

Spend 10 minutes choosing three animals and matching each to a habitat. Draw one habitat and label the food, water, shelter, and space it provides.

Check understanding

  • Match animals to their habitats and explain the match using 'adapted to', 'conditions', or 'shelter'
  • Correctly use 'habitat' and 'microhabitat' to describe different scales of environment with examples
  • Name at least three contrasting habitats and describe what makes each distinctive
“Can your child explain why a polar bear couldn't survive in a rainforest — using the word 'habitat' or 'conditions' rather than just 'it's too hot'?”
