- Step 1. Model saying “The cat is sleeping” before writing anything.
- Step 2. Give a simple prompt such as “A big bus.”
- Step 3. Have the child say one complete sentence about the prompt twice aloud.
- Step 4. Have the child write the sentence they just rehearsed.
- Quick check. Success means the child says a complete sentence aloud at least twice before attempting to write it.
Worked example. Prompt: A blue bird. The child says “The blue bird can fly high” twice, then writes the rehearsed sentence.
Optional challenge. Give a prompt such as “A happy frog.” Before writing, have the child say the complete sentence aloud twice, then write the sentence rehearsed.
What to notice. Save a parent note quoting one complete sentence the child said twice before writing.
