Generalising Patterns

Recognise and use repeated reasoning to generalise: spot calculation patterns, describe rules for sequences, and predict results using known mathematical facts

Teaching Table

Set out your lesson

Practise the bounded task in Generalising Patterns; see exact limits before inferring broader coverage.

Activity

Can explain a known addition/multiplication fact; distinguish a rule from a few examples.

Policy

Exact directed source edges retained; earlier authorship is not learner attainment.

Materials
  • These supplied stage cards

  • Scrap paper and pencil; oral/pointing response where appropriate

Sequence
  • Read readiness and decide on support without treating prerequisite authoring as learner readiness.

  • Open Show first and explain its model.

  • Use Guided Try with support and its separate adult key.

  • Close Show and guided keys before Try, unless this Try is explicitly supported.

  • Reflect on an actual attempt, including help used.

No Printer

Use the supplied screen cards; copying the exact task to paper is optional, not required.

Privacy

Use only invented scenarios and optional anonymous local notes. Do not request names, photos, family finances, medical data, accounts or uploads. Stop uncomfortable physical activity.

Use the complete materials on screen or print only the current sheet. Keep adult guidance out of learner view. Retain an earlier model only when the current step supplies it as context.

Teaching limits and safe use

These are finite task opportunities, not proof of mastery. Record what was attempted and what support was used.

  • Tests bounded generalizations and counterexamples, not proofs of every sequence rule.

Check understanding

  • Use a known doubles fact to derive a near-doubles answer (e.g. 6 + 7 = 6 + 6 + 1 = 13)
  • Notice that subtracting 10 from any two-digit number always reduces the tens digit by 1
  • Describe a rule for a pattern and use it to extend or predict (e.g. 'each time we add 5, the ones digit alternates between 0 and 5')
“When your child is practising times tables or number patterns, do they spot a shortcut — like "if 6 × 7 = 42, then 6 × 8 must be 48" — and use known facts to work out ones they haven't memorised yet?”
