Set out your lesson
“Fluency means a quick, sure answer. Within 5, we want answers that come fast, not a full count from one every time. Finger counting is a backup, not the goal.”
Bring to the table
- Ready fact cards: 2+3, 1+4, 5-2, 4-1, 3+2, 5-3
- Optional paper and marker if a card needs rewriting

- Ready fact cards: 2+3, 1+4, 5-2, 4-1, 3+2, 5-3
- Optional paper and marker if a card needs rewriting
- Step 1. Shuffle the ready cards. Show 2+3 and wait briefly for an answer.
- Step 2. Continue with 5-2, then mix addition and subtraction from the set.
- Step 3. If your child counts every time, model one quick recall: “2 and 3 make 5,” then retry that card later.
- Step 4. Finish when your child has answered most cards without long hesitation.
- Quick check. Success means your child answers at least four of the six ready facts correctly and most answers come without starting a full finger count.
Worked example. 2+3 → 5. 5-2 → 3. A fluent answer comes right away; counting all fingers is slower backup.
Optional challenge. Mix the same facts in a one-minute round and count how many correct quick answers your child gives.
What to notice. Save a parent note listing four facts and the answers, such as “2+3=5 quick; 5-2=3 quick.”
