Teaching approaches

Gakuva’s recommended starting approach is selected. You can still compare every option.

Selected Default Gakuva

Let’s count slowly. Touch each object once and say one number for each touch.

Get 5 small objects. Line them up, have your child touch and count each one, then mix them up and count again. Start with 3 objects if needed.

Check understanding

  • Point to or touch each object exactly once while saying number names
  • Do not skip objects or double-count when counting a set
  • Recognise an error when someone counts an object twice
“If your child is counting a pile of grapes, do they touch or point to each one exactly once as they say each number — without skipping any or counting the same one twice?”
