Understanding Area

Understand that a unit square has one square unit of area and that the area of a plane figure is the number of unit squares that cover it without gaps or overlaps

Area measures the two-dimensional space inside a boundary in square units. For a rectangle, equal rows and columns connect area to multiplication.

Spend 10 minutes drawing two grid-aligned rectangles with whole-number side lengths, counting their unit squares, and connecting each count to length × width.
