Writing Process Vocabulary

Know and use the vocabulary of the writing process — compose, plan, draft, revise, edit, proofread, genre, audience, purpose, narrative, recount, instruction, paragraph, sequence, and detail — and understand that these words describe distinct steps and decisions that all writers make, not just tasks to tick off

Teaching approaches

Gakuva’s recommended starting approach is selected. You can still compare every option.

1 approach

Selected Default Gakuva

Writing is a series of decisions. Plan means decide what to say, draft means make a first version, revise means change big ideas, edit means fix small mistakes, and proofread means read the final piece carefully. Audience means who reads, and purpose means why we write.

Spend 10–15 minutes planning and drafting a tiny bear piece, then revising, editing, and proofreading it for one chosen audience and purpose.

Check understanding

  • Use 'compose', 'revise', and 'edit' correctly when describing the stages of writing
  • Explain who the 'audience' is for a piece of writing and how that changes what they write
  • Describe the purpose of a piece of writing (to persuade, inform, entertain, or instruct) and match their language to it
“If you asked your child to explain what they're doing when they write a story at school, could they walk you through each step using words like 'plan', 'draft', and 'revise' — showing they understand it's a process, not just one sitting?”
