Vocabulary: social awareness

Know and use the vocabulary of social awareness — including stereotype, prejudice, discrimination, equality, equity, bias, compassion, and fairness — and understand what distinguishes these closely related concepts

Teaching approaches

Gakuva’s recommended starting approach is selected. You can still compare every option.

Selected Default Gakuva

Social awareness vocabulary helps distinguish related ideas. A stereotype is a broad assumption about a group; bias is an unfair leaning; prejudice is a judgment formed without fair evidence; discrimination is unfair action. Equality gives the same support, while equity adjusts support for fair access. Compassion notices suffering and wants to help; fairness considers what is just.

Spend 15 minutes sorting short, fictional scenarios under stereotype, bias, prejudice, discrimination, equality, equity, compassion, and fairness.

Check understanding

  • Explain what 'stereotype' and 'prejudice' mean and give an example of each from everyday life
  • Use words like 'equality', 'equity', and 'bias' correctly when discussing a scenario — e.g. 'That's not equity because not everyone got what they needed'
  • Identify an example of discrimination in a story or news article and explain why it is unfair using the correct vocabulary
“If your child hears a classmate say something that groups all people of a certain background together, can they explain why that's a stereotype and how it differs from a fact about an individual person?”
